An interactive sound map of Lower Manhattan

Traveling to fixed coordinates to make recordings is a unique and engaging way to explore both familiar and unfamiliar surroundings. In this interactive sound map, the artist visited 12 coordinate locations across Lower Manhattan with the sole purpose of listening to the ambient sounds of each environment. These coordinates were not deliberately curated, and some locations consequently proved difficult to access, or had little of particular sonic interest to offer. Regardless, at each coordinate, the artist explored the surrounding blocks and captured sounds that are curious, mundane, or easily overlooked in everyday life — hoping to invite others to discover the pleasure of exploring their living environment with listening as the primary mode of attention.

Move the cursor across the map to hear each location. Drag the knob to crossfade between the original recording and its resonance — the same sound treated with EQ and reverb to draw out the acoustic character of the space.
